How To Clean Costume Jewelry

Precious metal jewels used to be a sign of wealth in the past. Only rich people afforded to purchase them especially when they were costume made. Nowadays costume jewelry is still quite expensive but the designs are more intricate than ever. What makes this type of jewelry so appreciated is the rarity and, believe it or not, the fact that it is very difficult to maintain. Cleaning costume jewelry is in many respects more difficult than cleaning ordinary jewels.

How to clean costume jewelry with natural substances?
There are some tricks to help you clean your costume made jewels that use things which can be found in every household. You should not try this at home if the stones from the jewels are not secured in their settings or have a porous structure.
 What you need:
 A place well lit
 Warm water
 Liquid soap
 A mild toothbrush
 A dish
 A clean cloth

You have to choose a well-lit place so that you can spot the dirt. If the pattern of the jewel is intricate this might be difficult to do, but if you do not clean it very well it wont shine like you want it to. Do not use very hot water because you can get burns and destroy the jewel. If the piece of jewelry has stones that are not secured using claws, they are probably stuck using special glue. In this case the procedure is definitely not the best solution.

Allow the costume jewelry to sit in the warm water with just a little bit of liquid soap for about a half an hour. After that, wash it with clean warm water. Only after this step you can use the mild toothbrush to clean the impurities that are still left. To make sure that the toothbrush is mild enough go with one specially made for children. Work it gently so that you do not scratch the metal or the stones. The next step is to dry it. Do this gently too using a paper tissue or a clean cloth.

How to clean costume jewelry with special cleanser?
Many jewelry shops sell products to help you clean your jewels at home. Those special substances have to be used with care so that they do not touch the skin. There are also special brushes that can be used on delicate jewels so that they preserve their shine. However, if you do not want to do this at home it is better if you take them to a jeweler and have them cleaned from time to time. This is the safest way especially if they have glued precious stones. So, dont take any risks if you have a precious piece of costume jewelry you want to pass on to your children.
